Stephen has worked in private equity since 1996, at Compass Partners (a £1 billion PE fund) and then Next Wave since 2004. He has extensive management experience at global businesses undergoing major structural change in the branded consumer products, chemicals, electronics, paper and food processing industries.
In 2003, Stephen led the management buy-in of Vacant Property Services Limited. As Chairman, he guided its growth from £1 million EBITDA to over £20 million, becoming the world’s largest vacant property security services company with over 45 depots across Europe and the USA, before leading its exit to TDR.
Prior to private equity, Stephen was Chairman and CEO of Albert Fisher Group, a FTSE 250 international food-processing group, Chairman and CEO of Arjo Wiggins Appleton, the FTSE 100 international paper group, Finance Director and Managing Director of Plessey, the large UK Electronics Group, and had an extensive international career at Cheseborough Ponds, a large branded consumer products group. Other roles included senior financial positions with Lindustries (an industrial conglomerate) and the Vernons Organisation (a privately owned conglomerate) after qualifying as a chartered accountant with Deloittes.
Stephen’s non executive roles have included Lonrho PLC, Securum PLC, Aviation Leasing Ltd (Chairman), Hoskyns PLC (deputy Chairman), Servisair (Chairman), Lonrho Africa PLC and the UK advisory Board of Rabobank. Stephen was a founding member of the Financial Reporting Council in the UK and is an honorary Fellow of the City and Guilds.
